Frequently Asked Questions

What was the inspiration behind the book Mer?

While teaching first grade at All Saints Cathedral School (school referenced in Mer), I had a dream about a mermaid wearing Victorian clothing pushing a pram (fancy British word for stroller). The next day at work I shared the dream with a co-worker. I am a huge C.S. Lewis fan, and I read somewhere that his inspiration for writing the Chronicles of Narnia came from a dream he had about a fawn in a forest with parcels. I thought to myself – this might be my C.S. Lewis moment, so I decided to write a book that reverse engineered a reason why mermaids would wear Victorian clothes. Ta-da!

Spoiler - I based the underwater observatory in the book on the Observatory Tower at Coral World in St. Thomas.
